SVG set for regional/int’l track and field meets

St Vincent and the Grenadines has positioned itself to host international/regional track and field meets, with the completion of the synthetic track at Diamond.

The track was handed over to the government of St Vincent and the Grenadines on October 20, following nine months of construction.

Costing about EC$ 4 million, the track has additional facilities for field events, such as high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot putt, discus, javelin, hammer throw and steeplechase.

The track and field facilities are also complemented by a full sized football field.

Noted track and field coach and technical official Woodrow Keylee” Williams, told SEARCHLIGHT that he is excited that the country has constructed a facility that athletes and coaches have been craving for many years.

“I want people to go and have a look at the track, because many have never been close to one… I want athletes to do so as well, as they need to have a first-hand look at what they are going to use in the upcoming months,” Williams informed.

Williams, though, is cautioning persons to wear the proper footwear when doing so, as care must be taken.

With the completion of the track, St Vincent and the Grenadines is waiting on the confirmation from World Athletics.

An approved World Athletics surveyor was here recently and reportedly gave the track the thumbs up.

Apart, reports are that the site was given high grade for its potential for further development.

Among the scope for development is the presence of the parcels of land close to the facility as well as its close proximity to the Argyle International Airport (AIA).
