Akani Slater wins men’s 400m at Jamaica track meet

Vincentian Akani Slater of G C Foster, was the winner in the men’s 400m, clocking 46.79 seconds in the Velocity Fest 2020 at Jamaica College, last Saturday.

It was the first track and field meet held in Jamaica since the onset of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in March.

The meet was held behind closed doors with only athletes, coaches and other officials being allowed into the venue, with spectators and the media being locked out.

They also used protocols suggested by World Athletics and the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA), whereby the blocks and anything else that would have been touched was sanitised in between each race.

Also, no number bibs were used, while the call room was not necessary, as the athletes were to report to the start line directly.
