Football takes over Association of the Year award

THE ST VINCENT and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF) took over the reign as Association of the Year, at the 2019 National Lotteries Authority National Sports Awards staged last Saturday at the SVG Community College’s auditorium.

In the process, the SVGFF stopped the SVG Cricket Association Inc., from going three straight.

On the back of a stellay year in 2019, the SVGFF also had to ward off the other finalist, the SVG Table Tennis Association.

During 2019, St Vincent and the Grenadines won both the senior men’s and senior women’s Windward Islands Football Association (WIFA) titles.

The senior men’s team also placed second in the group in Tier B of the CONCACAF Nations League, and was one win away from earning a direct ticket to the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

SVG also won the Caribbean Football Union Female Under-14 Challenge Shield. At that outing, Vincentian Areka Hooper was the top goal-scorer.

At the CONCACAF Under-15 male championships in Bradenton, Florida, Vincentian Oryan Velox received the Golden Boot award for scoring the most goals.

During the year, capacity building courses were held for coaches, referees, medical personnel and media sessions with members of the various national teams.

Also clubs participating in the National Championships received significant increases in financial assistance, with significant finance given to the various community leagues in operation.

In 2019, the SVGFF ramped up its Marketing, Public Relations and Promotions Department, which made the various activities of the national federation accessible to the public.
