Cornelius Stewart is 2019 senior sportsman of the year

CORNELIUS STEWART, captain of the St Vincent and the Grenadines senior men’s football team Vincy Heat, was last Saturday night at the SVG Community College auditorium, adjudged the senior sportsman of the year, 2019, when the National Lotteries Authority National Sports Awards were held.

In doing so, Stewart outdid SVG, Windwards and West Indies cricketer Sunil Ambris and long distance athlete, Junior Ashton.

Stewart thus, led St Vincent and the Grenadines to the senior men’s Windward Islands Football Association (WIFA) Tournament, which was hosted here.

He netted crucial goals against St Lucia and Barbados as his team played undefeated in the tournament.

At the CONCACAF Nations League level, Stewart’s goal-scoring ability was pivotal, as his three goals were the most for the St Vincent and the Grenadines’ outfit.

St Vincent and the Grenadines, under Stewart’s leadership, placed second in Group Four of Tier B in the Nations League, just missing out on a direct ticket to the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Plying his trade in the Maldives with Maziya in that country’s Premier League, Stewart netted 16 goals.
