SVG musters one win in CONCACAF U-20 qualifiers

St Vincent and the Grenadines were beaten 3-2 by the United States Virgin Islands last Sunday evening at the Nicaragua National Stadium, in the CONCACAF Under-20 qualifiers, to finish with one win, and three losses.

In their final match of the group, the Vincentians took the lead in the 8th minute through Mekeal Williams.

The US Virgin Islands equalised in the 40th minute through Shomari Francis.

St Vincent and the Grenadines went ahead in the 54th minute when Jerron Dopwell netted, but the USVI again brought parity in the 74th minute.

The US Virgin Islands were to seal the contest in the 84th minute, when Mekeal Williams turned the ball into his own net.

St Vincent and the Grenadines ended the tournament with one win and three losses.

Their lone triumph came last Friday, when they beat Montserrat 5-1.

Netting for St Vincent and the Grenadines were Alpheus Medica, Joel Quashie and Jaheim Pompey, along with two own goals, both converted by Ahijah Daley.

Medica scored in the 11th minute; Quashie – 47th minute, Pompey – 66th, with Daley’s blemishes coming in the 3rd and 54th minutes.

Lewis Dahberry got Montserrat’s consolation goal in the 39th minute.

The Vincentians had suffered earlier defeats from Guyana 3-0 and versus the host Nicaragua, lost 2-0.

Handing the Vincentians their first defeat, Osafa Simpson had items in the 35th and 47th minute, while Omari Glasgow registered Guyana’s third in the 68th minute.

And, against Nicaragua, goals in the 35th minute by Harold Medina and Edgar Castillo in the 88th minute, handed the Under-20s their second blanking.

Nicaragua nipped Guyana 1-0 to win the group.
