SVG secures a bronze medal at 2019 Pan American championships

St Vincent and the Grenadines left the 20th Pan American Championships with a bronze medal on the weekend. The team that represented the nation in San Jose, Costa Rica, was made up of 2019 Carifta Games 800m bronze medalist Handal Roban, Canadian-based triple jumper Mikiesha Welcome, Kahlil Cato, as coach and Alexandra Walrond, as Manager/Chaperone.

On Friday, July 19, Roban ran in the semi-final of the men’s 800m, finishing 5th in a time of 1:52.69 seconds. His place did not earn him a berth in the final.

Welcome, in her first outing representing her home country, fared better, as she placed 3rd in the women’s Triple Jump the following day. On her second of 6 jumps, she leapt to a personal best distance and national record of 13.15 metres, which was enough for the bronze medal.

Welcome returns to Canada on Monday, July 22, while the other team members return home on Tuesday, July 23.

The executive of Team Athletics SVG has extended congratulations to Welcome on her position, and to the team overall.
