National netball coach satisfied with debut stint
Last August, Vasha Adams was on court as a member of the St Vincent and the Grenadines senior netball team, 10 months after, she is head coach of some of her former team mates.
At the inaugural ECCB/ OECS International Netball Series, held here at the Arnos Vale Netball Complex, Adams helped St Vincent and the Grenadines to second place.
Reflecting on her debut as chief strategist for the team, Adams told SEARCHLIGHT last Friday, the last day of the tournament: “It was a good feeling because of the respect shown to me by the players…I am very grateful that they allowed me (as coach), and the experience was a very good one for me and will help me going forward as a coach”.
Adams said though it was not an easy road, as she had to battle “critics”, because there were persons who questioned her abilities as a coach.
Additionally, Adams underscored it was nervy having to face the Vincentian public.
“As you know, the Vincentian public is a very hard public to play in front, but my girls were determined that despite everything around them, they were here to play netball… We just wanted to show St Vincent and the Grenadines that it is a young team and we were proud to represent our country,” Adams reasoned.
St Vincent and the Grenadines was nipped by Grenada for the title on goal difference, as both teams finished on 13 points.
St Vincent and the Grenadines won six matches and drew with St Lucia in the double round tournament involving five teams.
The hosts beat Dominica 54 – 25 and 59-29, and overcame Antigua and Barbuda 47-42 and 50- 37. They defeated St Lucia 42-39 and drew 42- all, while versus Grenada won their first encounter 54-43 and lost the second 54-57.
Grenada also won five matches and had their encounter against St Lucia rained out, and the two points were shared.
Both Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines lost to each other.
Adams, though, was satisfied with the second place.
“We were looking for the first place, but placing second, I am still satisfied with the contribution which each member of the team gave,” Adams concluded.
