SVG’s famed 1979 football team to be honoured

Players of the famed 1979 St Vincent and the Grenadines football team will get additional recognition from the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF)Revelation of this came from the SVGFF’s president – Marvin Fraser, as he addressed the opening of the SVG Over 35’s masters competition.

“This year is 40 years since the 1979 team did us proud and the Football Federation and all of us at this time, to continue to remember those guys …I want say here emphatically that the SVG Football Federation has a great spectacle in store for these guys,” Fraser said in appreciation.

He said that apart from the players being feted and venerated, his organization plans to decorate the offices of the SVGFF with memorabilia of the team.

“When the refurbishment of the office is finished, we can all revisit those players who put St Vincent and the Grenadines on the map,” he promised.

Fraser said that the purpose of the “mini museum” was to ensure that the present generation of footballers can connect with those of the past.

Forty years ago, St Vincent and the Grenadines’ football was boosted, when in the Caribbean Cup, this country placed second to Haiti in Suriname.

Among St Vincent and the Grenadines’ conquests were wins against host Suriname as well as Trinidad and Tobago.

Such was their impact, that the tag line was developed, “It is not the size of the country, but the quality of teamwork that counts”.

The 1979 team is regarded as one of the best senior men’s football outfits that this country has produced.
