World XI hits six in Diamonds football league opener

The potent World XI, hit six against defending champions of the Hairoun Caesar’s Real Estate Diamonds Football League, when the 2018 edition kicked off at the Diamonds Village Playing Field, last Sunday.

Known last year as Caesar’s Defenders, World XI took revenge on SV United, beating them 6-2, as the two squared off in the feature match.

Accounting for World XI’s goals were Curlan Joseph, who scored three, Tyrese Gibson and Kishorn Gonsalves, one each, and an own goal.

Okeefe Woods and Shaville Barker were SV United’s goal scorers.

When the two met in last year’s final, SV United won on kicks from the penalty spot, after both had played to a 3-3 tie in regulation time.

World XI and SV United are part of a 16-team competition. The teams are stashed into two zones – A and B.

Following the preliminary round, the four top teams in the two zones, then advance to the quarter-finals.

The winners of the quarter-final matches play in the semi-finals, to determine the two finalists.

First prize gets the winner’s purse of $2,500, while the runner gets $1,000 and third place pockets $500.
