GTC to host mixed doubles tennis tournament
After an absence of more than 15 years, St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) will once again see the staging of a mixed doubles tennis tournament.
Making this a reality is the Grassroot Tennis Club (GTC), in collaboration with one of its long-standing signage holders, Lewis Pharmacy.
Set to serve off March 3, at the Grand View hotel tennis facility, the tournament is expected to draw about 12 pairs and will run for two weeks.
The mixed doubles tournament is one of many tournaments calendared by the GTC for 2018.
âWe are getting the ball rolling with the mixed doubles, as for years, such a tournament has not been held, which is an unfortunate case,â head of the GTC Grant Connell declared.
Connell, in lamenting the âdepressingâ state of tennis in SVG, said that the GTC will do its part in reviving its fortunes, through ensuring that development takes place and tournaments are staged.
Connell said part of the clubâs approach is the holistic development of its members.
He commented on the continued assistance given to Antonio Cain by a former coach of the club, Deron Grant.
Grant, who resides and coaches in Oman, has been helping with Cainâs education welfare and last Monday he was presented with a cheque for $500.
âWe look at the whole person and Deron (Grant), despite not being physically attached with the Grassroot Tennis Club, his heart is in the right place and his continued help to Cain is testimony of this,â Connell stated.
Connell confirmed that Cainâs talent is such that he has to get more regional exposure; hence, efforts would be made to make this a reality in the very near future.(RT)
