Cane End take hold of Larry Bascombe Memorial Knockout

Cane End Gunners were last Sunday afternoon, at the Cane End Playing Field, crowned the inaugural winners of the Larry Bascombe Knockout cup.

Gunners’ hold on the cup came after a 5-4 win in kicks from the penalty spot.

In regulation time, the fast paced Keno Matthews had put Greiggs in the lead.

But a defence blunder let in Orande James to restore parity for Cane End.

Both teams could not further pick each other’s defence, sending the match to be decided by kicks from the penalty spot.

Cane End Gunners, apart from becoming the first winners of the knockout cup, pocketed $700, along with drinks, compliments the Hairoun Brewery, with Greiggs getting a $300 pay-out.

The knockout cup was a memorial for Larry Bascombe, who was synonymous with football in the for Marriaqua Valley from the 1980s up until his death in 2008.

Bascombe was a long-standing president of the defunct Marriaqua Sports Association, which organized football and other sporting events in the Marriaqua Valley.

The Larry Bascombe knockout cup was an undertaking of the Yosiah Dascent led Marriaqua Football Association.(RT)
