Three-member SVG boxing team heads to St Lucia

A three-member St Vincent and the Grenadines Boxing Association team left St Vincent and the Grenadines to participate in the Caribbean Development Boxing Tournament, scheduled for December 13 to 16 in St Lucia.

The team comprises: Cavanaugh Gumbs – coach and boxers Tyrodel Delpeche – light heavyweight and Agustus Cummings – super heavyweight.

Both boxers will compete in the beginners’ Novice Division.

This third edition of the event is a development tournament, which is geared toward serving as a nursery for the production of boxers for elite competitions staged by the American Boxing Confederation (AMBC) and the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA), and to give technical officials of the region an opportunity to get much needed practice in preparation for moving forward in the International Amateur Boxing Association training programme.

The boxing event is the biggest boxing tournament in the region and a total of 142 boxers were slated to compete in the tournament, where 20 referee/judges will be officiating in the events.

In related boxing news, local referee Leslie Pope left St Vincent and the Grenadines for St Lucia one day ahead of the boxing team, to participate in an AIBA 1-Star Referee/Judges Course.

Both outings by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Boxing Association were facilitated by the St Vincent and the Grenadines National Olympic Committee.

The team will be returning to St Vincent on Sunday, December 17.
