Barrouallie dedicate Inter-community League title to former player

“This one is for Chicken”, was the shout of Dorren Hamlett, as his team, Bank of SVG Barrouallie, began its celebration of the Senior Men’s Division of the SVGFF Inter-community League football title, last Sunday night at the Victoria Park.

Hamlett’s expressions were picked up and repeated by the other players, as they posed for a team photo.

“Chicken” was the alias of Roy Richards, a former member of the Barrouallie league team and captain of the senior St Vincent and the Grenadines team.

Richards was killed by gunshots on July 8, this year, while at a shop in his town of Barrouallie.

Had Richards been alive, barring other factors, he would have featured in last Sunday’s final.

But those who were selected played their part, as Barrouallie defeated defending champions and red-hot favourites Layou, 2-1, in an entertaining final.

Layou got on the score sheet within three minutes of kick-off, when its talisman, Myron Samuel, converted a direct free kick.

Barrouallie responded with strikes from Trivis Fraser in the 27th minute and Chavel Cunningham in the 38th; the latter proved to be the winner.

It was a grand finale that was set up, following their contrasting wins in the semi-finals.

Barrouallie beat Calliaqua 3-1 and Layou edged out Sion Hill 1-0.

Calliaqua then defeated Sion Hill, 3-2, to finish third.
