Carlton Daniel retains men’s singles TT title

Carlton Daniel remains at the pinnacle of local table tennis, after retaining the title as national men’s singles champion.

Daniel, who in 2016 won the title, did so again at the nationals held at the West St George Secondary School.

His opponent in the final was his riding buddy Bob Ballantyne.

But there was no friendship when play was called, as Daniel pounded Ballantyne in straight sets 11-5, 12-10, 11-7, 11-9, in a best of seven matches.

In the quarter-finals, Daniel overcame Joseph Carrington 3-1 (11-3, 8-11, 11-7, 11-70 and in a showdown with Sean Stanley in the semi-finals, sliced past him 13-11, 4-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-2.

Ballantyne, in his meeting with Kavir Gaymes in the quarter-finals, won 11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 11-2 and blanked Damion Dublin 11-6, 11-9, 11-7, 12-10, in the semi-finals, to set up the decider with Ballantyne.

Both Daniel and Ballantyne joined forces to take the doubles crown.

The duo was unbeaten in the round-robin doubles competition.
