New champions crowned in Bequia basketball tournament

Raptors won the First Division, Rising Stars – the Second Division and Hawks – the Under-16, as titles were lifted last weekend in the 19th annual Vita Malt Bequia Basketball Association’s Tournament at the Clive Tannis hard court.

Raptors, in taking a 3-1 win at the expense of the East Blazers, lifted the title for the first time.

East Blazers got off to a bright start, winning game one, 58-54, but Raptors came back to take game two at 53-51, game three at 77-57 and game four, 70-50.

The win by Raptors kept East Blazers still yearning to win its first title, although having the distinction of appearing in the most finals.

Meanwhile, Rising Stars took the Second Division, beating Young Duke, 2-0. Rising Stars won game one 82-79 in overtime play, and bossed the second 80-59, to sweep the series.

And, Hawks clawed back from a game down, to take the Under-16 Division, 2-1 over Dragons.

Dragons had taken game one 22-21 before Hawks levelled the best of three series 1-1, by winning game two 54-34.

With all to play for last Sunday evening, Hawks closed out the contest 38-29, thus being crowned the 2017 Under-16 winners.

Wizards were the 2016 First Division champions; Southern Stars won the Second Division and Hornet took the Under-16.
