First Division Cricket final set for Sunday

Two teams – one spot. That is the scenario facing Ruddy’s Electrical Unique Warriors and Providence Electronics Solutions North Leeward when the two meet on Sunday, from 10 a.m. at the Sion Hill Playing Field, in the final of the National Lotteries Authority First Division of the national cricket competition.

Apart from the cash awards and trophies, Unique Warriors and North Leeward are vyeing for promotion to the Premier Division of the 2018 national programme.

The race is also on in the batting, as Unique Warriors’ William “Bill” Edwards has 274 and North Leeward’s Shammon Hooper is on 231 runs.

The two teams were triumphant in the semi-final outings, last Sunday.

At Stubbs, Unique Warriors beat the 2016 winners Smashers by 92 runs and at Sion Hill, North Leeward ousted last year’s runner-up French Verandah SVG Community College by three wickets.

Unique Warriors posted 239. Joelano Neil struck 4 fours and 5 sixes in his 63, while Parnell Browne contributed 41 and Sylvester Vanloo, 39.

Bowling for Smashers, Anthony Charles snared 3 for 60, Kesworth Lewis, 2 for 29 and Marvin Harry, 2 for 6.

Smashers, in response, fell for 147, with Kesworth Lewis hitting a top score of 39 and Rawdon Bentick, 24.

Joelano Neil capped off a good match, taking 3 for 9, while Reginald Jeffrey took 3 for 19 and Joseph Medford, 2 for 46.

And, SVG Community College reached 188 for 9. Leading them was Alex Samuel, who hit 42 and Romando Mars, 31.

The pick of North Leeward’s bowling was Javon Samuel, who grabbed 4 for 39, while Shammon Hooper took 3 for 24 and Kentish John, 2 for 6.

Benniton Stapleton then struck 58, Shammon Hooper, 27 and Vidal Charles, 21, as North Leeward replied with 190 for 7. Jerremy Haywood, with 4 for 62, was the SVG Community College’s most successful bowler.

Haywood finished with 22 wickets, one fewer than Smashers’ Javid Harry, who scalped 23.
