Belfongo gains national community inter- league status

The Belfongo league will be an addition to the next national community inter-league football competition.

This was made known at the Belair Playing Field, at the closing ceremony of the 2017 Hairoun Belfongo football competition.

Announcing the new national football status for Belfongo, was president of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF) Venold Coombs.

In making the revelation, Coombs praised the organisers for keeping football alive in the community, thus assisting in curbing some of the social scourges, inclusive of violence.

At the awards ceremony, Junior Mc Dowald of Shane Rentals Fresh, with nine goals, was the highest goal-scorer in the league format of the competition.

Meanwhile, Tayon Burgin of Toni Barks Santos, Kenton Walters of Lucans, and Ceno Pompey of Thompson Cooling Services Fresh received the most improved young players’ awards.

Also, Zamaro Mofford of Lucans, was adjudged the best young defender and Herschel Burgin, also of Lucans, won the best young midfielder award.

LLB Street Kickers retained the league title for the third year in succession.  Second was Shane Rentals Fresh and Conquering Lions, third.

Street Kickers collected the challenge trophy, the first place trophy, medals and $600, while Fresh got a trophy, medals and $400.

And for placing third, Conquering Lions got a trophy and $200.

Conquering Lions won the knock-out title by defeating Catalans 4-nil and added another $200 to their winnings.

Toni Store Barks Santos won the late Ron Noel challenge trophy in the season’s opener.

Nine teams took part in this year’s competition.
