Commendable performance by Blue Marlins Swim Club

The Blue Marlins Swim Club produced another brilliant performance at the recently held 26th Annual Aquatic Centre International Invitational in Barbados over the weekend of May 19-21.

The five-member all-female team, which comprised Abigale DeShong, Adiah Phillips, Kennice Greene, Kelsea Nichols and Zariel Nelson and chaperoned by coach Neiasha Alexander, amassed 101 points, placing Blue Marlins 8th overall from a field of over 140 swimmers from 19 clubs. Swim clubs from Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada, St Lucia, Antigua, Florida and host country Barbados were represented.

The medal tally count was three gold, five silver and one bronze. Placing second overall in the 8-and-Under age group was Zariel Nelson, earning seven medals, comprising three gold and four silver, while breaking six national records (50m and 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly and 200m individual medley). The other complement of swimmers in the 9-10 age group comprised Kennice Greene, earning one silver and one bronze, Adiah Phillips – one bronze and Abigale DeShong producing five personal best times. Kelsea Nichols, in the 11-12 age group, gave a commendable performance from her individual allotted events.

It was Zariel’s and Kelsea’s first time swimming in a 50m pool, while Zariel recently demonstrated her ability at the RHAC Invitational in St Lucia in a 25m pool in April 2017.

This International Invitational meet was also an approved qualifier event for the FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary in July this year.
