Clinchers sweep all at their own softball opening

Nice Radio Clinchers took all that was at stake last Sunday afternoon at the opening of the 2017 St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Co-operative Credit Union Clinchers Twenty/20 Softball Cricket Competition at the Richland Park Oval.

First, Clinchers was the obvious choice among the adjudicators for the best dressed team on show and doubled up by also taking the best banner award.

Then, on the field of action, Clinchers copped the Ball-O-Rama title, as they beat Gairy Construction Simple Boyz in the one-over affair.

Simple Boyz had made 5 runs off their over, which Clinchers overhauled, losing one wicket in the process.

Fifteen of the 20 teams registered for this the sixth edition of the competition participated in the march past and Ball-O-Rama exercises.

Country Meets Town Outa Trouble are the defending champions.

Speaking at the opening, vice-president of the Clinchers Club Rohan Giles expressed his satisfaction at the media coverage the competition had received since its existence.

“When we look at the level of promotion enjoyed by the sponsors over the three months or so of this tournament for the last five years, when translated into dollars and cents terms it will add up to a healthy sum in advertising dollars… And they (The SVG Police Co-operative Credit Union) recognizing this, can only appreciate that their decision of six years ago to join with the Clinchers Sports Club in this venture was both sensible and visionary.

“Our gratitude to president Junior Simmons and his Board of directors of the SVGPCCU is heartfelt and the benefits derived from this tournament are mutual – they enjoy a wide amount of promotion, while we organize and host this event, which provides the opportunity for persons off all ages to showcase their skills and winning prizes at the same time,” Giles added.

Matches in the competition are played on Saturdays and Sundays.
