Junior squash players command play in OECS championships

Host St Vincent and the Grenadines copped most of the titles that were at stake in the National Lotteries Authority OECS Junior Squash Championships here last weekend at the National Squash Centre, located at Paul’s Avenue.{{more}}

Of the 10 categories which were contested, the local players stashed away eight of them.

Taking titles were Jlan Mc Master and Jason Doyle, while the trio of Kai Bentick, Thandi Myers and Giovanna Miller-Alexander, captured two titles each.

Mc Master played his way to the Boys Under-11 title, stripping his younger sibling Malachi, 11-6, 12-10, 11-5 in the final.

Another all Vincentian final resulted in Jason Doyle seeing off Omari Wilson 11-2, 11-6, 11-4, to win the Boys Under-19.

Meanwhile, Kai Bentick secured the Boys Under-15 and Under-17, with fellow Vincentians having to settle for the runner-up spots.

Bentick defeated Rashid Constance 11-8, 9-4, 14-12 in the title match of the Under-15 and beat Mikal Quashie 11-6, 11-2, 11-0 in the Under-17 final.

Also, Thandi Myers pouched the Girls Under-17 and Under-19 categories at the expense of Kerstin Gordon of the BVI and her sister Deirai Myers, respectively.

Myers outplayed Gordon, 11-8, 9-4 , 14-12 and Deirai 11-3, 11-8, 11-9.

Completing the three double winners was Giovanna Miller- Alexander, who made good of the Girls Under-13 and Under-15.

She dismissed Loushanna Peters 11-1, 11-3, 11-2, to win the Under-13 and beat Jada Ross 3-11, 11-6, 11-8 in the Under-15, as both finals featured an all- Vincentian cast.

The two titles which eluded the Vincentians’ net were bucketed by the brother and sister Luca and Darci Reich of the other competition team – the British Virgin Islands.

Luca copped the Boys Under-13 by beating Jlan Mc Master, 7-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-3, and Darci – the Girls Under-11, over Briana Findlay also of the BVI, 11-4, 8-11, 11-9, 11-13, 11-8.

At last Saturday’s closing ceremony, other individual awards were distributed. It was seven-year-old Malachi Mc Master who was adjudged the Most Outstanding Player.

The Most Improved Female Player award was taken by Giovanna Miller-Alexander, while another Vincentian, Mikal Quashie, won the Most Improved Male award and the Male Sportsmanship award.

Darci Reich got the Female Sportsmanship award.(RT)
