GSSS take basketball title… volleyball next in line

The George Stephens Secondary School (GSSS) has copped the 2015 basketball crown and has eyes fixed on holding on to the volleyball title as well.{{more}}

Such is the confidence of the physical education teacher assigned to the school, Kathleen James.

“We have taken the basketball; volleyball is next,” James quipped in an interview with SEARCHLIGHT.

But the basketball title was a welcome addition to the trophy cabinet of the school.

“We welcome the win, as we played unbeaten throughout… Also Union Island went into the tournament as the favourites and we were the under-dogs,” James reasoned.

The institution took hold of its first basketball title last Friday afternoon, recording an uncomplicated victory over the defending champions of the last tournament held in 2013 – the Union Island Secondary.

George Stephens Secondary was the dominant outfit throughout, sending early signals that they meant business, taking the first quarter at 22-7.

GSSS then romped to a 45-16 lead at the halfway point and it was 61-30 at the end of the third quarter.

The George Stephens Secondary finally won 78-42.

Leading the way for the GSSS was the player of the final, Brendon Smart, who poured in a game high 37 points, while Joul Mills was Union Island Secondary’s top scorer with 13 points.

Other accolades which came Smart’s way were the most points in the tournament – 181 and the most three points shots registered – 17.

In the semi-finals, the GSSS trounced Bishop’s College Kingstown, 106-32, while Union Island Secondary squeezed past Bequia Community High School, 66-63.

Bequia Community High docked in third, with a 111-35 dismantling of Bishop’s College Kingstown in the play-off, which preceded last Friday’s final.
