Enroy Lewis upsets local cycling slate

It was not the usual script when the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cycling Union held its DASCO Pharmacy 44 mile road race last Sunday afternoon.{{more}}

Instead, it was Enroy Lewis, a virtual unknown, who stood on the top tier of the podium during the presentation ceremony at the Sion Hill intersection.

Lewis, a resident of Calder Ridge, who is not a regular competitor, outlasted the more accomplished cyclists, to be the first to cross the finish line, in a time of 2 hours 18 minutes 29 seconds.

Lewis stopped the clock at that time, after completing the course, which began just outside DASCO Pharmacy on Halifax Street, to Georgetown and finally to the Sion Hill intersection.

Placing second overall and first in the Over 35 segment was Peter Durrant, who was timed at 2 hours 21 minutes 09 seconds.

And Lucky Antrobus, who had been perched at the summit, having won the two events for the year thus far, got toppled. Antrobus’ third place time was 2 hours 21 minutes 09 seconds.

Trailing Antrobus to the finish line was Zefal Bailey, who was hamstrung by a puncture.

Bailey finished fourth overall in a time of 2 hours 24 minutes 32 seconds.

Marlon Wilkinson, in 2 hours 29 minutes, captured the second spot in the Over 35’s and was fifth overall.

The sixth cyclist to finish was Steve Ollivierre, whose 2 hours 33 minutes 39 seconds put him third in the Over 35 category.

Orel George clocked 2 hours 41 minutes 19 seconds, to finish seventh.

Quazim Thomas, who was the lone entrant in the Mountain Bike category, completed the Kingstown to Bridgetown to Sion Hill course in 1 hour 50 minutes. He cycled 25 miles.

Two competitors in the open category – Cammie Adams and Oral Johnson – could not complete the 44-mile event, because of problems with their bicycles.

The SVG Cycling Union will, for the next two Sunday afternoons, stage its “Keep Moving “ events, set for 4 to 6 p.m., around capital Kingstown.

According to a release from the Union, the events are “fun rides,” especially geared at families. (RT)
