Local volleyball setting to make big spikes in 2015

The end of action would be in sight when the executive of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Volleyball Association (SVGVA) rolls out its mat of activities for 2015.{{more}}

The spiking gets going this Friday, January 23, with the commencement of the secondary schools’ tournament.

Excited about what is on offing is president of the SVGVA Alana Mc Master.

“We are going to see an increase in the number of teams taking part in this year’s competition… We have seven female teams and eight male teams…. We have new teams in Bishop’s College Kingstown and the Buccament Bay Secondary, who will bring a male and a female team,” a bubbly Mc Master told SEARCHLIGHT last Saturday.

“We also will be having again the firms’ tournament right after the school tournament, hopefully by the second or third week in March,” the SVGVA head highlighted.

Mc Master noted that high on her organization’s agenda is a vibrant club tournament.

Responding to the requests of some of the active volleyball units, Mc Master advanced, “The clubs were complaining that they were not getting competition, so we are hoping to have one, but also that they will also respond favourably when we do ask them.

“We also want to go into the communities and we are encouraging the clubs to start training programmes in order to groom players,” Mc Master advised.

Outside of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Mc Master said that her organization is looking to send representative teams to the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association’s Under-20 and Under-21 tournaments, when the dates and venues are determined.

“We are looking to attend as many beach tournaments as we could, both seniors and juniors, as it is much cheaper to send out teams for beach rather than send out a full team for court volleyball,” Mc Master reasoned.

Recognition and Awards

Wanting to pay homage to those who have served the sport during her tenure, Mc Master said her executive is proposing to host an awards and recognition ceremony during March.

“We want to have an award and appreciation ceremony, where can say thanks to everybody… It was my first year as president and we had some high moments and we want to reward the players, the coaches and the individuals who made it a success,” she noted.

Mc Master, who took up the presidency in November 2013, on reflecting on her executive’s tenure thus far, commented: “We did not get everything right, but we are going to learn from it.”(RT)
