New champions of table tennis in business

A new entity, a new singles winner and possibly a new doubles champion will make the claim for the titles of the 2014 Business Houses Table Tennis Tournament.{{more}}

When this year’s tournament served off last Tuesday evening at the West St George Secondary School auditorium, the 2013 team title holders, Computec/Third Eye Security, was not among the six listed competing business houses. Instead, there is a Computec/Irie Travel.

A spokesperson for the organizing committee of the tournament told SEARCHLIGHT that they were adamant about upholding the rule that no national player, whether current or former, would be allowed to participate.

Reports are that one half of the Computec/Third Eye Security team attempted to register two former national players of yesteryear, but this was rejected by the organisers.

It is also likely that Alonzo Primus, who copped the singles title in 2013 and who was a member of the Computec/ Third Eye Security, may not defend his title.

Also, uncertainty looms over if the combination of Davon Cato and Collin Cambridge will be intact when the doubles segment begins.

Cato and Cambridge took the doubles crown last year, when they played under the then Excel/Media banner.

This time around, Cato has entered his family establishment, Cato Heavy Equipment, while Cambridge has now teamed up with new entrant Lotto Combine.

Cato told SEARCHLIGHT last Tuesday night that he was unsure if he and Cambridge would defend their title.

Confirmed though in the team race for honours are Computec/Irie Travel, TJ’s Supplies, Lotto Combine, Cato’s Heavy Equipment, Vinlec and SG De Freitas.

And, last Tuesday, as the tournament began in earnest, there were wins for Cato Heavy Equipment, who saw off Computec/Irie Travel 3-1 and TJ’s Supplies who powered past Vinlec, 3-0.

Following the round robin format, the four top teams will enter the semifinals of the tournament.

The open singles are slated to commence on September 17, with the completion of the tournament set for September 20. (RT)
