When the qualification round took place late last month, the trio of Deighton King, Kamal Hunte and Damien Dublin got through to the men’s teams championships.

The Vincentians, who were coached by Joseph Carrington and managed by Marlon Gibson, were placed in the group phase alongside Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and St Kitts and Nevis. They secured victories against Guyana and St Kitts and Nevis, but lost to Trinidad and Tobago.

In the quarter-finals, St Vincent and the Grenadines was whipped 3-0 by Jamaica.

Also through to the CAC games from the qualification round are Guatemala, as well as Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica and Honduras.

They join the ranked teams in Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, while host Mexico gets automatic qualification.

Team SVG’s coach Carrington told SEARCHLIGHT: “We know that we would be going into a much harder round of competition and we acknowledge that we must train harder… We are going to train five days per week, stepping up from the three times.”

Carrington said that during the next few weeks, having identified the weaknesses in El Salvador, he, along with other technical officials of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Table Tennis Association, would be working on the deficiencies.(RT)
