GTC duo off to good start in St Lucia


The two Grassroot Tennis Club’s representatives to the ITF/GSDF English Caribbean Wilson Under 12 Cotec Team tournament, taking place in St Lucia are off to a good start.{{more}}

Up to press time St Vincent and the Grenadines had played Suriname, with Antonio Cain, No.1 seed for his team, defeating Juwell Ritveld 4-0, 4-0 and Akeil De Roche whipping Giordi Sampson 4-0, 4-1.

They then combined to defeat the Suriname team in doubles play.

The tournament sees 11 countries, with St Vincent and the Grenadines, Jamaica, Suriname in Group B, with Group C, made up of Bermuda, Guyana and St Lucia team two.

Group D has St Lucia team one, Curacao, Barbados and Antigua and Barbuda and group A is made up of Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada.

The tournament would be played in a round robin format, with two teams advancing from each group.

Managed and coached by Khir Huggins, the GTC team was sponsored by the Mustique Company, the Mustique Tennis Club and SVG General Services Ltd.

Director of the GTC Grant Connell said the club is indeed grateful for the kind support from the sponsors and thanked Stephen Joachim, Leroy ‘Fly’ Edwards and Richard Schaffer for their continued support for the development of tennis in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The tournament ends this Saturday, with the team scheduled to return on Sunday. (RT)
