Firms’ football competition – ‘glad to have you’

The two new senior teams and those in the introductory Under-15 division of the fourth edition of the Digicel/ Aeropost/Hairoun Beer Breakaway Masters firms’ competition were given a warm embrace, as the 2014 version opened last Saturday afternoon at the Grammar School Playing Field.{{more}}

In welcoming the new entrants, head of the Breakaway Masters organization Leopold Dopwell told them: “We are glad to have you,” which is the tag line for the competition.

Dopwell’s greetings were directed to the National Lotteries Authority and Fisheries, the two entities making up the senior division for the first time, while System 3 one and two, Layou, Volcanoes, ADARE, Central Shooters and United Strikers are part of the introductory Under-15 category.

Also addressing last Saturday’s ceremony were manager of the National Sports Council Cecil Charles; director of Physical Education and Sports Nelson Hillocks; president of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation Venold Coombs; and Danielle Cupid, a representative of Digicel.

And, it was straight into competition.

Getting their campaign off to a winning start in the Under-15 division was Layou, who beat System three-B, four goals to one, while in the senior division, SVG Post saw off debutants National Lotteries Authority, three-nil and SVG Port Authority got past Customs and Excise, two goals to one.

Yesterday, in the Under-15 division, Central Shooters defeated United Strikers three-nil, and in the senior division, the other debutants Fisheries were sizzling against KFC, beating them one-nil; likewise Bonadies edged out Gibson’s Building Supplies, also one goal to nil.

All matches are carded for the Grammar School Playing Field, with double headers each day – Monday to Friday, featuring an Under-15 match from 3:25 p.m. and a senior fixture from 4:30.

On Saturdays and Sundays, there will be double headers in the senior division.

This will be so for the rest of the school vacation, when the Under-15 matches will be played on Saturdays and Sundays.(RT)
