Mitchell was the toast of the tournament, which concluded last Saturday night at the West St George Secondary School.

In getting to the top of the heap, Mitchell, a resident of the Grenadine island of Bequia, ousted the top seed Kadeem deShong and romped to a three straight win over Cruz Halbich in the final.

Mitchell outpointed Halbich 12-10, 11-6, 11-5, in uncomplicated fashion.

It was sweet revenge for Mitchell, who lost to Halbich in the semi-finals of the National Championships, staged two months ago.

The defeat suffered by Halbich was his second straight in a final, as he also went under to deShong at the National Championships.

On the side of the gender of that age group, the same was the case, as previous champion Aliyah John was dethroned.

Perching on the throne as the new champion of the Under-17 female segment is Vedel Charles.

In the deciding final, Charles outlasted John 3-2 ( 11-5, 7-11, 4-11, 13-11, 11-4).

The Under-17 players are the products of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Table Tennis Association’s schools’ programme.

The Beverly Warren Memorial Tournament was held in honour of Warren, a former national player. Warren died at age 50 in 2003, following a brief illness.

She was the holder of several females’ singles titles, as well as the subregional Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) level, where she champed at the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.(RT)
