Young squash players make their mark

Three of the brightest sparks in junior squash here in St Vincent and the Grenadines, Thandi Myers, Kai Bentick and Jason Doyle, all captured two titles each, when the 2014 national championships concluded last Saturday at the National Squash Centre at Paul’s Avenue.{{more}}

Myers was top in both the Girls’ Under-15 and Under-17, as she left Lauryn Doyle and her sister Deirai Myers, to settle for the runners-up spots respectively.

It was a similar taking for Bentick, who pumped his way to the Boys’ Under-13 and Under-15 crowns.

In both showdowns for the titles, it was Rashid Constance who had to congratulate Bentick for champing the two age categories.

For Doyle, it was a continuation of his rise established a few years ago in the lower divisions.

Doyle emerged winner in the Boys’ Under-17 and Under-19, ahead of Akeem Constance and Omari Wilson in that order.

The other titles decided went to Giovanna Miller-Alexander, who beat Anezka Moss to win the Girls’ Under-11, while Jlan Mc Master overcame Jatin Jiandani to cop the Boys’ Under-11, and Jada Ross defeated Giovanna Miller- Alexander en route to the Girls’ Under-13 title.

And, Deiriai Myers took the Girls’ Under-19 over Gianna Miller-Alexander.

Following the two days of competition, a training squad was named to defend the OECS title, set for St Lucia next month.

Those selected to train for possible selection were Giovanna Miller- Alexander, Lauryn Doyle, Deirai Myers, Gianna Miller-Alexander, Thandi Myers and Jada Ross, who make up the girls squad.

The boys included are Jlan Mc Master, Kai Bentick, Rashid Constance, Jason Doyle, Akeem Constance, Omari Wilson, Mikal Quashie and Geronmo Ross.

Before the final team journeys to St Lucia, they and others junior players will pit their skills, as the executive of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Squash Association provides outlets for competitions outside the nationalaionships. (RT)
