The Symposium, the first of its kind, was a collaborative effort by COMCACAF and COMEX.

Gaymes, in reviewing the symposium, told SEARCHLIGHT: “It was one that basically entailed how to become a top referee and the nutritional side of eating as a top referee.

“We also looked at the positioning of referees during the match as well as the use of the dry spray in order to maintain the 9.5m and wall management”, Gaymes reported.

Gaymes noted that apart from the classroom sessions, the participants were taken on a tour to the Aztec Stadium, where they viewed the World Cup Qualifier between Mexico and Panama.

The symposium was enhanced by the participation of renowned referees from the national and international levels, including Pierluigi Collina, Arturo Brizio Carter, and Brian Hall, as well as members of CONCACAF, FIFA and the Mexican Football Federation.

According to Gaymes, the biggest piece of advice taken away by the participants were words delivered by Collina, who told them: “the goal should not be just to reach a World Cup finals, but that of inspiring a youth to want to become a referee because of your performance both on and off the field”.

The aim of the symposium was to enhance the work of referees in promoting the development of professional refereeing in football in the region.(RT)
