Canouan Football League kicks off

The 2013 Canouan Football League kicked off on Sunday, September 22, at the new recreational facility at Friendship, Canouan, with the usual parade.{{more}}

Eight of the nine registered teams turned up for the match past. Club Nuevo All Stars Combine, the defending champion, won the best dressed award.

Brief remarks were made by the president of the League, Glenroy Baptiste, officials from the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF) and Maridonna Burgin, a representative from CCA. Burgin also presented $800 on her company’s behalf towards the purchase of the championship trophy. Baptiste stressed the importance of proper conduct on and off the field of play and good sportsmanship. He also said that the committee would be tough on players who display unsportsmanlike conduct towards any player, official or the organizers.

The feature game saw Glasgow Construction Upsetters defeating Club Nuevo All Stars Combine 5 goals to 3, on penalty kicks, after the score was level at 2 goals each at regulation time.

Matches will be played on Saturdays, Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and play begins at 4:30 p.m. Teams participating are: Club Nuevo All Stars Combine, CCA Blue Stars, Corridon Construction, Glasgow Construction Gunners, Glasgow Construction Upsetters. Gumbolimbo Boys. Overcomers, Streetside Ballers and Warriors United. Notably absent from this year’s competition is Derrick Construction.
