The division, which will kick off at a later date, is part of the League’s thrust to encourage the development of youth football. Previously, the League hosted an under-17 division.

Chair of the AFL Michael John told SEARCHLIGHT last Saturday at the opening that his organisation strongly believes that youth development is the way to go, hence their emphasis on having the under-15 division.

John said that since assuming the leadership of the AFL 10 years ago, this has been one of his burning desires.

Prior to John and his organizing committee taking control of the League, the AFL was administered by the Arnos Vale Educational, Sports and Cultural Organisation (AVESCO) for 17 years.

Up to last Saturday’s opening ceremony, 13 teams had registered, but John said that he was leaving an opening for at least three others which have indicated interest.

Nine of the 13 teams were presented at the opening ceremony, which was followed by the competition’s opener between 2012 champions Sharpes United, which was previously called Roxdale and System 3 One.

Sharpes United got off to a winning start, defeating their opponents, 3-2.

Joining the two in Group One are 1998 Hillside Rollers, Customs Sports Club, Hot Sun Ballers, Hope International and Thompson’s Cooling Transit Force.

In Group Two are Richmond Hill, Comsports Vincy Masters, Dove FC, National Properties Fair Hall, System 3 Two and Major Strikers.

Matches in the League will be played on Saturdays, Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays for the first two weeks.

This, John said, is a request from the National Sports Council, which is still carrying out restorative work on the outfield of the venue.

John noted that an additional day will be slotted in as the League will also share the venue with the National Lotteries Authority National Club Championships.(RT)
