Eight teams are mounting challenges in the revamped Hairoun Sion Hill Invitational Football Competition, being played at the Sion Hill Playing Field.{{more}}

Waging for top honours are Ballers XI, Mala Village Bad Lizards, Real Stingaz Village and Walvaroo City, which are in Group A and in Group B are Sion Hill Masters, Valley Stars Top Roseau, Power Play Bottom Roseau and Unity Investments Masters.

Teams in Group A will play each of the teams in Group B, and vice versa.

Following the preliminary round of competition, the eight will be paired off for the quarter- finals; the first placed teams play fourth places and third places play those which finish second.

This diverts from the previous undertaking of having a round robin system.

In a renewed format from the last competition held in 2010 to 2011, organisers have decided to allow each village to invite five guest players, as well as the inclusion of a combined outfit from East Kingstown.

Previously, only players who reside in Sion Hill or who have represented the community were eligible to participate.

Additionally, matches are played only on Saturdays and Sundays, with double headers slated for each day, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

And, when the competition began in earnest last Saturday afternoon, Ballers XI thumped Unity Investment Masters 7-1 and Mala Village and Bottom Roseau played to 1-1 tie.

On Sunday, Real Stingaz and Top Roseau drew 1-1 and Walvaroo City edged out Sion Hill Masters 1-0.

Matches set for this weekend: on Saturday Walvaroo City meets Power Play, to be followed by Ballers XI versus Valley Stars.

On Sunday, Sion Hill Masters and Mala Bad Lizards meet in the first of the double header; then Real Stingaz faces Unity Investment Masters.

The competition is set to come to a close on September 29.(RT)
