Table tennis making big comeback in SVG

The St Vincent and the Grenadines Table Tennis Association (SVGTTA) is currently making plans to participate in the annual Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Table Tennis Championships and the Senior Caribbean Championships in St Lucia in August 2013.{{more}} The OECS Championship take place from August 23 to August 25, 2013, and the Caribbean Championships, August 26 to September 1, 2013. The country’s last participation in the OECS Championships was in 2011, when SVG placed first in the Singles and Doubles. It is the first time the Senior Caribbean Championships will be played in the OECS.

Trials for the selection of male and female teams will take place July 29-30, August 3 and August 5, 2013, at the Girl Guides Hut in Level Gardens. The SVGTTA will be hoping to field a team of five men, three women, a manager, coach and one under-21 player.

Meanwhile, the Association is once again gearing up to hold its biggest local Business Houses Tournament (BHTT) in September, 2013. This tournament will take place from the September 9 to 20, 2013, at the newly built West St George Secondary School in Belair. At this tournament, former or present national players are not allowed to play. This is to help in making the participants of the respective business houses more evenly matched. A business house can register a maximum of three teams per gender, which would allow them to participate in the Teams, Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles categories. A business house can also join with another to form a team, but that team must share a single name.

Matches, as they relate to the BHTT, will be played nightly from 7 p.m.

Business houses interested in participating can contact Orville Haslam, head of the Finance and Tournament Committees at telephone: 493-3431 or email: [email protected], or Sean Stanley, PRO/Tournament director, telephone: 527-2118 or email: [email protected]
