SVGNA holds awards with a difference

The St Vincent and the Grenadines Netball Association moved away from the presentation ceremony, usually held at the end of the Division One Knockout finals, and last Wednesday evening staged a more formal affair at the Kingstown Netball Centre.{{more}}

With the use of lights, backdrops and other enhancements, the centre took on a look befitting an awards ceremony, for those who excelled in the 2013 edition of the LIME National Club Tournament.

Zonelle James of Sea Operations Nar Fren Dem scooped the Best Defensive Player among juniors, with Denesha Gurley securing the Best Centre Player award.

And, the emerging accurate shooter, Khadijah Williams, of Dutch Lady Clinchers, was voted the Best Shooter.

Among the seniors, perennial winner of the Best Shooter award, Skiddy Francis-Crick, added another such accolade for yet another year.

Francis-Crick was pivotal in helping her team, Vita Malt Maple, cop the Division One League and Knockout titles.

Western Union Mitres’ centre player, Annella Samuel, secured the Best Centre Court Player, with her teammate, Delonie Sam, being named the Best Defensive Player.

Sam was also in line for a special award from title sponsor LIME.

The Most Valuable Player of each of the teams which participated in the tournament, got a token for their achievement.

The various winners of the league and knockout in the four divisions and the team and individual winners of the shooting competition were also given due recognition.

An award was also presented to the most ardent spectator, Edmund Peters.

The executive of the SVGNA also paid homage to Gloria Ballantyne and Sonya Lewis for the stalwart contribution to netball both here in St Vincent and the Grenadines and the wider Caribbean.

Both served as administrators on the local, as well as the regional netball body.

Wednesday’s ceremony brought the formal close to the National Club Tournament.

Next up on the national plate, is the Firms and Industrial Netball Tournament, set to begin in September.(RT)
