Bustas retain national female basketball championship title


Xpert Computer Bustas drew from their reserves to keep their record of being the only team to lift the national female basketball title, since inception of the tournament some years ago.{{more}}

Facing Trotman’s Celebrity last Saturday night, at the New Montrose basketball facility in the final of the National Lotteries Authority sponsored tournament, Bustas were having it all their way in the first three quarters.

Both teams were locked at 8 apiece after the first quarter, but Bustas moved along to take the second quarter at 28-24. That lead inched on, as Bustas claimed the third quarter at 42-37.

The Darwin Vanloo coached Celebrity found some gaps in the Bustas defence and with Gailene Gordon out of the match on foul trouble, brought the score within one point of Bustas, 50-49 in the final quarter.

But Wayne Williams, head man of Bustas,juncture, which proved to be the turning point in the outcome, as Bustas cruised to a 68-53 victory.

The last quarter saw Bustas registering 26 points to Celebrity’s 16.

Gailene Gordon had a game high of 31 points for Bustas, with Avi-Ann Myers- Spencer scoring 18 points for Celebrity.

In the preliminary round of the tournament, Bustas, which is almost a carbon copy of the Western Union Mitres netball team, went under to Celebrity, their second defeat since the team’s formation.

The men’s division will be decided on Sunday when defending champion Aycees Calliaqua United meet Bequia United from 6:30 p.m.

Following the final, the presentation and closing ceremony will take place. (RT)
