Zefal Bailey wins another road race

Seventeen-year-old Zefal Bailey titled his fifth road race for 2013, when he rode his way to the top of the podium last Sunday, at the staging of the Facey Trading 52-mile event.{{more}}

Bailey’s winning time was 2 hours 48 minutes 50.16 seconds, as he was the first to reach the Sion Hill intersection. This, after the riders in category one had journeyedfrom the Co op gas station on Lower Back Street to Biabou, then back to the Roundabout in Arnos Vale and back to Biabou, finishing at Sion Hill.

Next was veteran cyclist Peter Durrant, who had bragged before the event that he had Bailey’s number this time around, only to once again have to eat his words.

Durrant had mounted a challenge for Bailey for the greater part of the race, but Durrant was left to only wonder of Bailey’s whereabouts, after he jumped him in the Belvedere area, on the second lap of the race.

Durrant registered 2 hours 49 minutes 23 seconds. Labouring to third spot was the inexperienced Casnel Duncan, who did the course in 3 hours 11 minutes 30 seconds.

For those who did one lap, Randy Wilkinson rode off with category two of the road bike cyclists.

He completed the 26-mile course in 1hour 31 minutes 51 seconds, leaving O’Neil George to take the second spot in 1 hour 39 minutes 49 seconds, and docking in third was Curtis Lewis in 1 hour 48 minutes 21 seconds.

Copping the mountain bike category was David Thomas. His time in the 26 mile distance was 1 hour 45 minutes 08 seconds, while Steve Ollivierre was second in 1 hour 49 minutes 20 seconds and rounding off the top three was Shawn Chandler in 1 hour 53 minutes 47 seconds.

In the other category — set aside for the two most active female cyclists, Niesha Alexander was again the winner. Alexander, known more for her exploits in the swimming pool, clocked 2 hours 23 minutes 16 seconds, while Crystal Durrant finished in 2 hours 40 minutes 38 seconds.

The top finishers were presented with prizes at the finish line.(RT)
