Table tennis to get administrative relief

A new executive of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Table Tennis Association should be in place by Saturday, May 11, when the long awaited and overdue general meeting takes place.{{more}}

The meeting is set for the National Sports Council’s boardroom at the Arnos Vale One Playing Field, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

A notice sent out on April 26, by general secretary of the SVGTTA Paul Velox, indicates that “coaches, enthusiasts and well-wishers of the sport”, are the main invitees to the general meeting.

The notice stated that the agenda of the meeting includes the presentation of reports, the nominations of candidates and the election of officers.

Reports say that the May 11 meeting will be the first general meeting of the association since 2007.

Elections were constitutionally due in 2011, which would have ended the four-year mandate of the executive.

The association had been in an administrative spin since the last elections were held in May, 2007, when Sean Stanley was elected president.

However, a volley of verbal loops was served up from within the executive aimed at Stanley. After six months of rallies, Stanley tendered his resignation.

Stanley’s departure let in Alonzo Primus, to preside over the association.

The Primus-led executive too had its internal challenges, as some members either failed to function or resigned, paving the way for the co-opting of others.

The absence of a general meeting and the protracted dormancy of the association led to several attempts by current Minister of Tourism, Sports and Culture Cecil Mc Kie to sort business out and get the organisation to function again.

An interim committee, headed by Tyrone Jack, was selected to take over the affairs of the association, which, in effect, triggered the May 11 general meeting.

But the general meeting is expected to have lots of chops and smashes, as it is likely that serves of constitutional issues will be part of the set.(RT)
