TSSS lone participant from SVG in 2013 Penn Relays

Other than the Thomas Saunders Secondary School (TSSS), none of the schools that were given the opportunity to participate in the 2013 Penn Relays took up the offer.{{more}}

Cecil McKie, Minister of Tourism and Sport, said on Friday that the TSSS responded early, while none of the other schools who were invited showed any interest.

Even the St Vincent Grammar School, the 2013 boys’ inter secondary school champions, did not commit to participating in the prestigious event, McKie said.

McKie made his comments while explaining that schools are not selected for the Penn Relays, but must qualify.

“The team must do well locally at the school games and must meet the required standards established by the Penn Relays and then they must also commit themselves to the funds to engage in serious training,” McKie explained.

He said the TSSS not only responded and committed early to attending the event, which is held in the United States, but they also met all the requirements.

“That is why the Thomas Saunders Secondary School is the only school under consideration to go to the Relays and they earned that right to participate,” McKie said.

The 11-member TSSS team, accompanied by coach Godfrey Harry, left the state yesterday.

The games commence on April 25.(DD)
