Double titles pouched at GTC Junior Tennis tourney
Three players copped two titles each in the Grassroot Tennis Clubâs annual Easter Junior Tennis tournament, which concluded last Saturday afternoon at the Haddon Hotel courts on Murray Road.{{more}}
Taking double awards were Demetra Fernandez, Akeil De Roche and Gabrielle Benn.
Fernandez won the Girlsâ Under-8 and Under-10 singles, ahead of Alesha Culzac and Sage Bascombe respectively.
De Roche, the reigning Eastern Caribbean Boys Under-10 champion, claimed the Under-10 and Under-12 categories. He outdid Rio Connell in the Under-10 final and dispatched Miguel Francis in the Under-12 championship match.
De Roche went on to be adjudged the most improved player on show by tournament director Agostini Soleyn.
Meanwhile, Benn was in winnerâs row in the Girlsâ Under-12 and Under-14. She defeated Alexi Humphrey en route to both titles.
Humphrey was, however, named most improved female player in the tournament.
Other winners were Che Connell, who secured the Boysâ Under-8, with Afi Lucas, the runner-up. Richard Hoyte pocketed the Boysâ Under-14, at the expense of Arnel Horne.
Championing the Under-6 titles were the tiny tots from the Rainbow Unique Pre-School.
Mc Kellyn Ince was the winner among the boys, with the runner-up, Luke Spence.
Taking the girlsâ title was Kathryn Miller, with Moriya Dallaway, second.
Soleyn, who was directing his first tournament, said that he relished the opportunity, as it was a learning experience for him.
Khir Huggins was the tournamentâs referee.
Come 2014, the GTCâs Easter tournament would see the Under-16âs and Under-18âs categories being incorporated; however, they are slated to be hosted at the National Tennis Centre at Villa.
Next on the plate of the of the Grassroot Tennis Clubâs menu is the return leg of the Grenadines Cup, the symbol of supremacy between the GTC and the Mustique Tennis Club.(RT)
