National Inter Community League Football Competition heating up

The senior men’s division of the Hairoun National Inter Community Football League has reached its quarter final stage.{{more}}

This elimination phase begins on Sunday at the Victoria Park from 5:30 p.m., with Sion Hill facing North Leeward, to be followed by the mouth watering clash between South Leeward and Central Kingstown.

The other certain quarter finalists are Barrouallie and Layou, while the last spot will be decided this evening at the Victoria Park, when Stubbs meets Bequia.

Stubbs, on four points, need only a draw to see them through, while Bequia on three points, must win to advance.

Public relations officer Earl Bennett, speaking at a press conference on Tuesday at the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation’s office on Bentinck Square, said that several notable players who missed out on the preliminary and second round, will feature in the knockout round.

Among those expected to show up are Shandell Samuel, Myron Samuel, Akeeno Hazelwood and Kenyon Lynch for Layou; Damal Francis and Romano Snagg for Central Kingstown; and Emerald George, South Leeward. All these players are current national representatives, but were either in Trinidad and Tobago or Barbados, plying their trade for clubs in those islands.

Bennett also revealed that the winners of the quarter-finals will get $150, as the SVGFF keeps good on a promise to award teams as they proceed further in the competition.

Teams which won their second round matches were given $100 for each win.

Meanwhile, Bennett reconfirmed that the semi-finals will be played on a home and away basis, as they go after the $10,000 cash prize for the winner.

He pointed out that all matches will be hosted at the Victoria Park; however, the teams will be assigned home or away status.

And, Bennett said that patrons in the quarter-finals and semi-final matches will have an opportunity to win prizes and tokens from Digicel and the St Vincent Brewery, as special promotions would be carried out during the half-time periods of the match.

Sunday, May 5, is the day set aside for the finals, when the various winners will be crowned, including the Under-13, Under-17 and senior men.

When the competitions were staged in 2012, all the titles went to the leeward side of the island.

Layou won the Under-13; Barrouallie, the Under-17 and senior men, and South Leeward copped the women’s competition. (RT)
