Sandy Bay captain leads from front

Denson Hoyte, captain of champion school, the Sandy Bay Secondary School, was the man of the moment when the 2013 United Insurance schools’ cricket final was staged at the Arnos Vale One Playing Field on Wednesday, March 27.{{more}}

Hoyte led from in front, shepherding his school team home to their first cricket title, with a knock of 83 not out.

This earned him the title of most valuable player of the final.

His other accolade was that of the competition’s leading scorer.

The right-handed middle order batsman scored 415 runs, at an average of 83. His highest score was 167, notched up against the Georgetown Technical Institute.

Also sharing the spotlight at the presentation was Petit Bordel’s Shamon Hooper.

The former national Under-15 player was acclaimed the best all-rounder.

Hooper chalked up 210 runs, at an average of 26.25. He had a top score of 60 versus Buccament Bay Secondary. Hooper also snared 20 wickets, at an average of 8.35 per wicket. His best figures were 5 for 17, also against Buccament Bay Secondary.

The most wickets — 34 at an average of 6.85 runs apiece, were captured by Basid Matthews of the St Clair Dacon Secondary.

Deroney May of the Sandy Bay Secondary was voted the better wicketkeeper in the final, with Dilworth Thomas, also of Sandy Bay, taking the most catches in the final award, with two pouches with his hands.

Taking the zonal awards were in Zone A – North Union Secondary; Zone B – St Clair Dacon, Zone C – Bethel High School, Zone D – Petit Bordel Secondary School and Zone E – Bequia Seventh Day Adventist.

Bethel High School won the third place when they defeated St Clair Dacon Secondary by one wicket in the consolation play-off.(RT)
