National netball swings into action this Sunday

Thirty netball units have registered for this year’s national club tournament, which serves off this Sunday afternoon at the Arnos Vale Netball Complex.{{more}}

The 2013 edition sees the return of LIME as title sponsor, after a four-year absence, when the tournament was financially supported by another telecommunications provider, Digicel.

Sunday’s proceedings begin at 3:45 p.m., when the registered teams will march down from the AVESCO club house, for the opening ceremony, which is set to begin at 4 p.m.

The opening ceremony will hear addresses from President of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Netball Association Dellarice Duncan, a representative from the sponsors, LIME, as well as government and sports officials.

A cultural package is also planned, along with the featured match and two competitive matches.

The featured match will see the two finalists in last year’s Facey Trading firms and industrial competition — NBC Radio and RSVG Police — trying to relive their epic battle, which is still on the lips of those who witnessed it.

This match replaces the traditional opener which featured the previous year’s division one winner and another top performer from the last showing.

The two competitive matches see ASCO meeting Dutch Lady Clinchers and Bequia facing off with Barrouallie.

Five teams are stashed in division one; eight are placed in division two, while twelve are lodged in division three and five in division four.

Among the entrants in division one is the Maple Club, which is the oldest netball outfit in the Eastern Caribbean. Maple came into existence in 1955.

At the end of last year’s league competition, Western Union Mitres emerged champion in division one; Sion Hill took division two, with Maple Two copping division three and Netters Netball club — the winner in division four.(RT)
