Former squash champion displeased with SVGTA’s state of affairs
Businessman and former national and sub-regional squash champion Leroy âFlyâ Edwards is not pleased with the state of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Tennis Association.{{more}}
Edwards expressed his concerns Monday during the handing over of a sponsorship cheque for the third SVG General Services Limited Junior Christmas Tennis Tournament at the Grassroot Tennis Club base at the Haddon Hotel court on Murrayâs Road.
âI am not pleased with the way tennis is being run ⦠I am not pleased with the association,â Edwards noted.
Edwards wants to see greater use of the six tennis courts at the National Tennis Centre at Villa, as well as the several hard courts across SVG.
âTake the courts and make use of them ⦠Tennis needs to be spread ⦠The hard courts which have been built across the country are idle.â
Edwards said sports in SVG in general needs to be decentralized.
In handing over the sponsorship cheque to head coach at the GTC Trevor Sam, Edwards lauded head of the GTC Grant Connell, for his efforts and called on other business houses to help sports where they are able.
The 2012 SVG Services Junior Tennis Tournament opens tomorrow at the Haddon Hotel courts on Murrayâs Road.
Close to 100 entries are expected in the week-long tournament.
The SVG Tennis Association has once sanctioned the GTC organized tournament.
Competition will be in the Under-6, Under-8, Under-10, Under-12 and Under-14 categories for both males and females.
The Under-6 category, which is purely developmental, would see participants involved in drills of skills.
Up for grabs are trophies for the winners and runners-up, as well as the most promising male and the most promising female.
At last yearâs closing ceremony, then minister of sports Frederick Stephenson promised a challenge trophy. (RT)
