Kingstown retains masters’ cricket title

LOG Enterprises Kingstown retained the SVG Masters T-20 title Sunday at the Arnos Vale One playing field,{{more}} with an uncomplicated 8-wicket win over North Leeward Combined.

Batting first, North Leeward Combined were restricted to 102 for 6 from their 20 overs. Orville Franklyn top scored with 41 not out.

In reply, Kingstown motored to 103 for 2 in 14. 5 overs.Player of the final Bradley Brooker hit 40 not out and Felix Greaves contributed 34 not out.

It was North Leeward’s first defeat in the competition, having played unbeaten in the preliminary round and having successfully come through the quarter-final and semi-finals phases.

Kingstown pocketed $1,200, along with a trophy and products from LOG Enterprise, while North Leeward collected $800, a trophy and products from LOG Enterprises.

It was Kingstown’s third lien on the competition.

North Leeward’s Williams Edwards took the play of the day award for his cover drive for 4.

Leon Samuel of Stanley Browne Stubbs was the competition’s highest run scorer, with 288 runs and was also the most valuable player, as he scalped 9 wickets.

Samuel was the lone century scorer in the competition.He hit 125 against Da Silva La Croix.

The top wicket-taker was Computec Belfongo’s Junior Bacchus, who captured 14 wickets.Also awarded were the bowlers who took 5 wickets or more in an innings.

Junior Bacchus had 6 for 6 versus La Croix; Frederick Trimmingham of Pastures had 5 for 5 against Glamorgan and Norman Robinson of La Croix bagged 5 for 27 against Belfongo. Stubbs won Zone A and North Leeward – Zone B.

Remarks at last Sunday’s closing ceremony came from chair of the SVG Masters Cricket committee Selwyn Allen; Secretary of SVG Cricket Association Samuel Holder; Manager of the National Sports Council Cecil Charles; National Lotteries Authority representative Anthony Dennis; and Minister of Tourism, Sports and Culture Cecil Mc Kie.

Fourteen teams participated in the seventh edition of the competition.The winner takes it all elimination competition is set for early in 2013. (RT)
