SVG captures gold at 2012 OECS swim meet

Swim Team SVG returned on Sunday from Antigua and Barbuda, where they won 10 medals in the 2012 OECS Swimming Championships.{{more}}

Leading the medal count for Swim Team SVG was Alexander Joachim, who placed second overall in his age category. Joachim, who competed in the Boys 8 and under category, won a gold medal in the 25 m breaststroke, in a time of 22.40 seconds; a silver medal in the 25 m butterfly, in a time of 18.36 seconds; a silver medal in the 25 m freestyle, in a time of 16.68 seconds and bronze medals in the 100 m freestyle and the 25 m backstroke in times of 1:29.8 seconds and 22.06 seconds, respectively. These times were all personal bests for Joachim, who led the efforts of Swim Team SVG by contributing five of the 10 medals won. He also placed 4th and 6th in two other races.

Joachim’s sister Shne won one silver and one bronze medal in the girls 11-12 category. In the 100 m breaststroke, she placed second in a personal best time of 1:26.44, while in the 50 m breaststroke, she placed third, in a time of 39.39 seconds.

Two bronze medals were won by the female 18 years and over relay team of Louise Mitchell-Joseph, Loren Gun Munro, Neisha Alexander and Kim Halbich, while Loren Gun Munro also won an individual bronze medal in this category.

The top six contibutors to the team were Alexander Joachim – 43 points; Shne Joachim – 21 points; Nikolas Sylvester – 17.5 points; Kyle Dougan – 13 points; Shane Cadogan – 12 points and Loren Gun Munro, 12 points.

The other swimmers representing Swim Team SVG were Chavez Joseph, Adora Lawrence, Storm Halbich, Arthur LaBorde, Dorian Antrobus, Zefal Bailey and Paul Cyrus.
