All squared in Grenadines Cup challenge
The Mustique Tennis Club outdid the Grassroot Tennis Club Sunday at the National Tennis Centre at Villa,{{more}} in round two of the Grenadines Cup, the symbol of the friendly rivalry between the two.
En route to claiming the cup, in the singles play, Mustique Tennis Clubâs Richard Schaffer defeated Grant Connell 8-4, Kirk Da Silva saw off Kevin Huggins 8-1, and Michael Charles got the better of Charles Findlay 8-6.
Grassrootâs triumphs came from Khir Huggins, who defeated Randolph Bailey 8-5, while Trevor Sam outlasted Glen Forde 8-1.
GTCâs captain Trevor Sam maintained his unbeaten record.
When both clubs met in the first play-off in Mustique on June 3, GTC came out winners, 5-4.
It was a sweet revenge for the MTC, as they were able to upstage the GTC on neutral ground.
Head of the GTC Grant Connell said his club and the MTC have been able to inject some life at the centre and hopefully more events can be channelled there.
Schaffer of MTC, whose idea it was to have the Grenadines Cup, said he hopes it grows next year and includes clubs from Bequia and Canouan.
âItâs healthy for tennis and at this point the game needs all the support it can get,â Schaffer said.
The next engagement on the local tennis circuit is the Karib Cable mixed doubles competition, set to serve off in the next couple of weeks at the Haddon Hotel courts at Murrayâs Road, home of the Grassroot Tennis Club.
Connell told SEARCHLIGHT Wednesday that the mixed doubles competition is geared towards reviving female tennis in St Vincent and the Grenadines and is also paying homage to Karib Cable, which has been one of the faithful partners of the GTC, since it began operations in February 2010. (RT)
