Vincentians make little impression in beach volleyball tour

The two relatively inexperienced Vincentian teams that participated in the St Lucia Beach Volleyball Tournaments last weekend found the going tough.{{more}}

In men’s play, Daryl Franklyn and Cluevvan Cumberbatch were defeated in both of the preliminary round matches on Friday, exiting the competition.

Franklyn and Cumberbatch were beaten 21-10, 21-17 by Guatemala’s Moisés Reyes and Erick Garrido.

The Vincentians also lost to Mitchel Daniel and Eargenell De Cuba of Aruba, also in straight sets, 21- 15, 21-8.

St Vincent and the Grenadines was joined by Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda and the British Virgin Islands in the double-elimination event.

Similarly, in women’s action, SVG’s duo of Nikita Campbell and Bownie Allicot succumbed to St Lucia’s number one team, Samantha Mann and Dania Hamilton, 21-13, 21-9.

Campbell and Allicot rebounded to edge out the St Kitts and Nevis combo of Antoinette Henry and Andrea Liburd 2-1 (24-26, 21-17, 15-13).

But the Vincentians went under to the Trinidad and Tobago B team, which comprised Pauline Woodroffe and Nancy Joseph, 21-12, 21-11.

St Vincent and the Grenadines is outside of the top 10 in the rankings of the teams which participated in the St Lucian leg of the tour.

The USA pairs conquered both the male and female categories of the St Lucia leg of the series, which has another five stop-overs.

The weekend’s competition was the ninth stop of the 2012 NORCECA Circuit and took place at Pigeon Point Beach.

The tenth stop will be in Trinidad and Tobago, November 14-19. (RT)
