Get involved in netball, advises basketball administrator

Basketball players desirous of gaining an overseas scholarship have been encouraged to also get involved in the sport of netball.{{more}}

“Netball teaches you the fundamental skills that you can tweak to make you a good basketball player”.

That’s according to basketball administrator Wayne Williams.

Williams’ statement came during the presentation of two-year basketball scholarships to three Vincentian athletes, who will attend community colleges in the United States.

The scholarship recipients are Akeem Smart, Marie-Ann Frederick and Sheldeen Joseph.

Frederick and Joseph both played netball for the national team.

“Persons who have benefited from basketball scholarships in the past, all most all of them played netball and played netball at the national level.

So persons out there who look at netball in a negative way, I’m saying to you get involved in netball…,” he advised.

Williams’s views were also supported by President of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Netball Association Dellarice Duncan.

“We are particularly proud because we’ve had a long history with the Basketball Federation in terms of persons going off on scholarships and they have all done us proud… Sancho Lyttle and Sophia Young; they were first netballers.

The skills acquired from netball can obviously aid your basketball ability.

“The Netball Federation, we are thankful that the skills and necessary abilities that we have instilled in two young netballers we have going off (to the United States) will pay dividends to them doing very well outside of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

“Both of them (Frederick and Joseph) have represented St Vincent and the Grenadines at the national level and they have come through the ranks of Under-16 netball and Under-23… So, they have that sort of discipline; so I am expecting nothing but the best from them,” Duncan stated. (AA)
