The opening ceremony heard brief remarks from president of South East Development Inc Albert Harry, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sports Elvis Charles, area representative Frederick Stephenson; president of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation Venold Coombs, and guest speaker Stanley Browne.

Harry outlined the organisation’s focus, as well as reviewed some of the activities in which it is involved, while Stephenson expressed his displeasure in the poor turnout of teams at the march past.

Charles, in his presentation, implored the players to strive to be like the footballers of yesteryear, who have made their mark on the local and regional scene. He further encouraged them to seek out opportunities to play at the professional level.

Browne told the players not to be afraid to lose and whilst they are playing to win, be magnanimous in their defeats when they come.

Charles made the kick-off to officially commence the competition.

Eleven teams are participating in the competition: SVG Coastguard, Calder Ridge, Bonhomme Ghetto Stars, Stubborn Youths, Brighton Star Block, Brighton Veterans, Choppins, Victoria Village, Prospect, Encamps Playing It Safe, and Comsports Masters.

Stubborn Youths were adjudged the best-dressed team among the few that participated in ceremony.

In the feature match, a St Vincent and the Grenadines select team defeated a Stubbs combined team, 3-0.

Brighton Veterans won the 2011 league competition and Stubbs Bridge Boys, the knockout. (RT)
